Chieftains is a frighteningly authentic 'best-selling' novel of the invasion of Europe by the Russian and Warsaw Pact armed forces seen through the eyes of the fighting men on the ground. In particular it tells the story of the crew of Bravo Two, a Chieftain main battle tank of the British 4th Armoured Division, and also that of the crew of 'Utah', an American Abrams of the 5th United States Force, as both units face the onslaught of the Soviet armour onto the killing zones of the German Plain. 'Chieftains' has been rated the best-ever novel of tank warfare. General Sir John Hackett who reviewed it, stated that it was 'a dramatic and authentic account'. Impeccably researched at military bases in the UK and Europe, and with the assistance of the British Ministry of Defense, Allied forces armoured personnel and ex-servicemen with battle experiences in various theatres of war, 'Chieftains' was written during the darkest and most tense period of the 'Cold War' between East and West. The book brutally shows what could have happened as a Third World War began.

So I had this suggested to me by a friend and by Amazon. Read the Kindle version in a day, and like a number of other people have mentioned its really abrupt in its ending. There was also just too many plot threads and a couple of them have ended even before they really got started or the ending seemed out of place. There was the main story line of a Chieftain tank crew, then a side plot of an American Tank Crew, then we were introduced to a SAS team that were suppose to raid the country side, then the command staff of the Chieftain crew unit, then the leadership of the NATO general HQ. The problem is that you are pulling for something good to happen with some of these side plots, only to see them killed or disappeared into the background of all sorts of other war stories. The ending of the whole novel is abrupt as well and gives no satisfaction. Understanding the topic covered being the 3rd World War, it as if the author is saying that its the end of civilization with that ending. The other thing that made it hard to understand the book and if its updated in the future for the Kindle, would be a map of the area covered. It was very hard to Google Earth the various locations and keep track of what was going on due to the various similar sounding German towns names
I really wanted to like it but even though the book is 300 pages, there is just not enough of a constant plot to recommend. This is like an outline of a story that was submitted by a publishing house and sold.

Chieftains Mr Bob ForrestWebb 9781468180954 Books Reviews
A lot of people have complained about the ending, and it's true it is unjustified. One could write some explanation but it would be verifying that the author failed to do that. And most likely because it would make it more apparent it is weak/wrong. However I so enjoyed being pulled into the action, meeting the crews and finding out a little about their home life--sometimes a bit too much (speed read). If this was another book I'd probably give it a 3, but I enjoyed it and it was worth the price. The beginning of the book was a real page turner.
Solid story of tank warfare with Russa. Given the current world situation and the general low state of European military readiness this could still come to pass. Defense budgets have been cut for years and the companies that used to build tanks have mostly shut down the production lines. Europe has announced that they are working on a new main battle tank that probably will not be ready for production for many years. The story told here factors in the probable shortage of equipment and trained, experienced manpower. I do think that a book called "Team Yankee" is a better read and a better description of what tank warfare is like although it has a more optimistic outcome that may net be warranted. That said, this is an "Ok" read.
it was very interesting except when describing the 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment operations at Fulda which is an American unit but the author used British terminology and slang. This significantly detracted from my interest. On the other hand, no one is a omnipotent Jack Ryan-like hero either, which is a nice change from the genre. Lots of action, and some unexpected turns.
Chieftains is best when Forrest-Webb is writing about the weapons of war and the tactics of the Cold Wars armies. Even those familiar with the period might be surprised to read about West German bridges that were designed to be blown up when the Soviets invaded, or of nuclear mines to be used in case the West was about to be overrun. In this way the book is like the work of Tom Clancy and his "techno-thrillers". Chieftains is weaker in the backstories of its characters, and dialogue, which is not as engaging and weighs on the action..
... more input from other former or current fellow armor crews; I am sure there are hundreds out here more than willing to share their experience with the author. I served with the Cav in Germany the same time he did, and as I could not question the methods or routines of my fellow British treadheads, I wish Bob would have research more on American armor crew drills and armors and a bit more research on NATO and Warsaw TO&E and tactics. Accurate commo protocol would have made this outstanding novel more realistic and plausible.
Finally, my major issue with this e-novel was the way it ended. I understood Bob was going for a dramatic ending of some sort but for me, it just felt like an unfinished novel. I am just guessing he meant for the main characters to die in the end... did the war gone on? Did the Russian retreated? Are we, the readers to be treated with a follow-up novel of another Chieftain crew in the same conflict?
Well, all said, I am still looking forward to a second novel from Mr. Webb and hope for a more entertaining reading. Good luck.
The ending was, as if I crashed into a brick wall at 70 mph. The Soviets used a 20KT tactical nuke against the Brits. The main protagonist, the tank commander, went into shock, understandable, however, he started crying “it’s over.” The interior of his tank had a fire spreading, his loader attempted to escape, the tank commander held him back saying “not yet lads.” The loader should/would be screaming “Fire” and pull/push the commander out of his way. The Brits have there own tactical nukes that they could use to respond in kind. Unless the Soviets were the mad men the west believed, the war would not escalate to a strategic nuke war.
Yes, the ending was terrible. Okay, maybe just disappointing, like the author ran out of creative "steam." That is not to say it was a sad or unhappy ending like Ralph Peters' "Red Army" - Chieftains just ENDED. Cop out. If he had maintained his edge throughout, this had the potential to be a 5-star book. Otherwise the only ding I could find is that some characters appeared and then disappeared with no clue as to their fate. Better proofreading might have caught that. All in all, a relatively good first novel from a somewhat unique perspective.
