On Being Human Woodrow Wilson 9781141531882 Books

This is a reprint of an article Woodrow Wilson wrote in 1897 for Atlantic Monthly magazine on the meaning of being human.

It is written in a 19th century style that will undoubtedly seem embellished and pretentious to modern readers. As a writer Woodrow Wilson is not even close to being in the same league as 19th century writers like Charles Dickens, Mark Twain or Rudyard Kipling and this article is not great writing. It would likely be long forgotten if its author had not become President of the United States 15 years after it was written.

But since it was written by a US President who had a lasting impact on the US government and global politics, this is worthwhile reading for anyone interested in Woodrow Wilson and/or the history of the period.

And it's a free download so there's no buyers' risk involved. 3 stars as an historical document because it was written by an influential US President.

One other reviewer had an interesting way of paraphrasing some of the points Wilson makes in this article. The reviewer wrote, "Wilson speaks of individuality as a virtue, while simultaneously praising social conformity. Wilson decries mimicry while applauding emulation, all the while making reference to keeping his inferiors under the lash of one whip."

That actually does come across in the article. Given Woodrow Wilson's record as President, the article is worth reading for what Wilson says about the desirablity of enforced conformity.

On Being Human Woodrow Wilson 9781141531882 Books Reviews

Full of thought, eloquently written. Sage and ageless.
I felt bad about how we represent ourselves in life but at the same time I felt motivated to make change.
I didn't find it extremely easy to read, but still enjoyed it.
Nice to read the words of the great man!
Note has grouped together reviews of several different editions of this book; this review is for On Being Human (Little Books of Wisdom).

This book contains an article written by the future 28th POTUS for the Atlantic Monthly in 1897, just after he had achieved tenure as a professor at Princeton, that arguably embodies the essence of his political and personal philosophy, which is both hopeful and historical, the idea that being truly human consists of behaving humanely, that you get more accomplished with temperate, well-balanced reasonableness than with humorless single-mindedness.

Note One could complain that this book is available online for free. Well, yes, what part of in the public domain do you not understand? However, trying to get away with giving someone a printout as a gift will earn you the nickname of cheapskate. If all you want to do is read it yourself, then by all means stick to the free sites. However, if you are looking for a way to get through to someone else, you are better off buying a copy, and a solitary sawbuck for this sturdy pocket-sized reprint is going to be tough to beat. The chief virtue of it being online is your ability to read it first and make sure that this is the book you want to give before ordering it.

Note Applewood Books has produced a nice looking inexpensive series of sturdy pocket-sized reprints of important American books, documents, speeches, pamphlets, and poems, the Little Books of Wisdom, uniform with this volume, that are ideal for gifting to doctors, lawyers, teachers, business professionals, and students of same The Way to Wealth,George Washington's Rules of Civility & Decent Behavior in Company and Conversation,The Constitution of the United States of America,On the Art of Teaching,The Poems of Abraham Lincoln,The Bill of Rights with Writings That Formed Its Foundation,The Strenuous Life,The Path of the Law,The Constitution of the Confederate States of America, The Jefferson Bible The Life and Morals of Jesus of Nazareth, A Message to Garcia, A Declaration of Sentiments, Robert's Rules of Order, Good Citizenship, A Discourse Upon the Duties of a Physician, The Declaration of Independence with Short Biographies of Its Signers, Teamwork, Stick-To-Itiveness, Opportunity, & You, The Wants of Man, George Washington's Farewell Address, Universal Declaration of Human Rights, The Speech of Chief Seattle, Common Sense, The Articles of Confederation, The Emancipation Proclamation, and The Gospel of Wealth.

Some selected volumes are also available in boxed sets Books of American Wisdom Boxed Set, CEO's Gift Box of Wisdom, Doctor's Gift Box of Wisdom, Lawyer's Gift Box of Wisdom, New Citizen's Gift Box of Wisdom, and Teacher's Gift Box of Wisdom.

And some have been published in Spanish Un Mensaje a Garcia and Constitucion de Los Estados Unidos.
A quick read, this book(let) gives some insight into the mind of one of our most intellectually idealistic presidents. I was amazed at how many highlights I made on these few pages, because so much of what Wilson wrote was worth sharing with others. Read it and enjoy.

For the , the footnotes at the end came out with very strange formatting, but the main text itself was fine.
The descriptive criteria doesn't quite match for this book; the plot, the mood, the pace, the characters...it's more of a notch, taken from the time, 1916, written as philosophy, not a story.
