Dropship Marines Eric S Brown Books Reviews
I'll be honest with you, I'm a huge fan of Eric S. Brown's books. I'm only familiar with his horror books, though. His rampaging Bigfoots, ferocious megalodons, and flesh-eating zombies are some of the best horror novels I've read. But I never read one of Brown's military sci-fi novels. Hell, I never read any military sci-fi novels before!! After reading Dropship Marines, I'll be ordering all of Brown's military sci-fi-fi books!! Brown brings the same intensity and energy to Dropship Marines that he brings to all his horror novels. His writing is fast-paced, violent, and Brown's battle scenes make you feel as though you're right in the middle of the action. And silly me... I thought since this was a military sci-fi book that we wouldn't be getting any monsters. I was very wrong!! Brown gives us some amazingly horrible creatures that will fuel your nightmares for a week.
Don't miss Dropship Marines. I'm so glad I picked this one up. Not only has Eric S.Brown proven once again that he's a fantastic writer and one of the best working today, but he also turned me on to a new genre. Don't miss Dropship Marines!!
While at the start all the elements are there to create what appears a great book, great characters, the novel psi skills several of the characters have, the book quickly deteriorates into a slash/bloody/horror fest creating a lose/lose situation. I got half way thru and stopped reading, jumped to the end for the last 10 pages or so and sure enough ended much the way I thought it would, very bleak.
Did it appear well written? Absolutely, so gave it 2 stars for that and the great characters at the start.

The continuous ripping apart of the humans by the psi/teleporting animals just grew boring very quickly. Humans were going to lose no matter what they did and some of the great characters we were introduced to at the beginning were quickly removed (usually in smallpieces that got eaten)
Some really unique features, such as the way the Ship Capain connected to the ship and other amazing psi skills gave some great evidence of how good the author's imagination was but not enough to save this book for me.
I wanted to really like this, but it was only so-so. The story outline itself is pretty cool. The execution sucks, though. Almost no character development, and some of the premise is ridiculous. Sorry, but no marine LT is EVER going to give a full marine Colonel the attitude that this one did, no matter what kind of powers he/she has. Also, there were way too many instances of low ranks questioning their superiors orders. Once again, doesn't happen. My main gripe, though, was just how shallow the whole thing was. It would have made a cool short story, but, unless Mr. Brown goes back and does an extensive rewrite, it just doesn't hold up as a book. Got to the end and, quite frankly, could not name one character that I felt invested in.
It was a good story ruined by really annoying failures of grammar. Please, get an editor or a friend with proper English skills to polish the text before releasing your work.
Eric S Brown has broken new ground here, with his first entry into the world of psionic powers, and he knocks it out of the park. We've got space marines, and aliens, psionics and Eric's usual brand of carnage, monsters and mayhem. If that doesn't spell awesome, then I don't know what does.
Usually you can guess where a book is going, not this one. It's like a roller coaster ride. Many ups and downs, then you are thrown to the left or right violently. Then you get to the end and you know how it ends or do you! I really enjoyed the book.
Good storyline and excellent characters. Fast moving and interesting, this story is unfortunately littered with typos that continually distract from the exciting way it is written. Loved the monsters though. I hope there are more stories about them (and less typos)
